Feeling numb or unable to enjoy good news can happen with depression, prolonged stress, trauma, or some medicines. This page explains possible causes, warning signs, and when to seek professional help in Pakistan.
Feeling numb even when good things happen can happen when your mind and body have been carrying stress for too long. It does not mean you are ungrateful or broken. Sometimes the brain dampens everything—sadness, joy and excitement—when it feels overloaded, exhausted, grieving, anxious, burnt out or unsafe. Poor sleep, alcohol or drug use, and some medicines can also make emotions feel flat; if this began after starting a medicine, do not stop it suddenly—speak with the prescriber.
Do one small thing today that gives your body a signal of being alive, without expecting instant happiness: take a ten-minute walk in daylight, eat something proper, have a shower, or sit with someone you trust for a few minutes. Also notice when the numbness started and whether your sleep, appetite, energy, concentration or interest in life has changed.
If this has lasted more than a couple of weeks, is getting worse, or is affecting work, study, relationships or self-care, speak with a mental-health professional. If the numbness comes with thoughts of harming yourself or you feel unable to stay safe, stay with a trusted person and seek urgent help immediately.
